Floor lighting has multiple applications in the modern home. It can be used for task lighting, reading lighting, and to create more relaxing ambient lighting, avoiding the glare of ceiling lights. You can use it to define spaces and to enhance dark corners. But one of our favourite ways to use floor lamps is within a cosy reading nook. There’s very little more enjoyable than curling up with a good book. But to make the best of it, you need a dedicated space and comfortable lighting.
Tips to Create a Cosy Reading Nook with Floor Lighting

Use an adjustable lamp
When you’re reading, it’s important that you get enough light in the right place to avoid eye strain. So, choosing an adjustable lamp that allows you to direct the light beam can be really beneficial. You can choose from more decorative designs, such as the Marlowe lamp, which has an arm, enabling you to swing the bulb over your seat. While a mother and child design, like the Montana, can provide ambient lighting as well as directed task lighting.
Choose the right light temperature
Light temperature can be confusing. But when cosiness is the aim, soft and warm lighting is the only way to create that cosy, welcoming ambiance. By selecting light bulbs in the 3,000K to 4,000K range, you can create a gentle glow that is bright enough to read by, but still comfortable to snuggle in. Alternatively, if you want a more versatile space, dimmable bulbs and lamps allow you the flexibility to adjust the light intensity as you need to.
Consider layering light
Whenever we talk about light design, we always recommend working in layers. This not only makes the area more visually appealing, but can enhance it’s function too. So, start with ceiling lighting. The next layer down will be your floor lamps, and potentially wall lamps. From there, you might add in table lamps. Or even LED strips around your bookcases or skirting boards. Creating interest, flexibility, and ambience.
Think about the position of your lights
Lighting can be really useful when you’re trying to define a specific area of a room. By using a tall floor light, like the Laura Ashley Dearham lamp, you can focus the light on the reading nook, helping to visually separate the area. And when you combine this with a warm bulb, you add cosiness, further defining the space.
Use floor lamps to create your own style
Floor lamps come in so many different styles that if you choose well, you can use it to express your design preferences and enhance the aesthetic of the space. For a classic feel, you might want to explore Laura Ashley floor lamps, with their antique brass and gold leaf stands topped with traditional pleated or barrel shades. While for a more contemporary feel, you have lamps like the Dar Lighting Lycia, with its pared back stand topped with three appealing orbs. When properly thought through, floor lamps should always be more than functional – they should contribute to the design of the room.
Floor lighting can contribute such a lot to a reading nook. Yes, these lamps give light, but they also define the space and enhance the overall aesthetic. So, take a little time and decide on your design, and you could soon have the perfect nook for unwinding with your favourite book.
